Hamilton, meanwhile, claimed he lacked front-end grip to avoid the collision after following another car closely. “The car crossed over right in front of me,” he said. The stewards agreed, penalising Hamilton for the clash but leaving Russell fuming over the car’s performance.

Wolff vowed Mercedes will work to rebuild Russell’s confidence, insisting the team must provide him with equipment that “holds up” under pressure. “That’s not just a fast car and a good engine,” Wolff said. “It’s something that gives him confidence in the car again.”
