Giannis Antetokounmpo Reflects on Humbling Loss to Miami Heat's 'Big 3' as Rookie

Giannis Antetokounmpo still remembers the 30-point loss he suffered at the hands of the Miami Heat's 'Big 3' in his fourth professional game as a rookie in 2013.

What happened?

The game took place on November 12, 2013, at the AmericanAirlines Arena, where Giannis came off the bench and held his own, registering 11 points on 4-for-8 shooting, four rebounds, and three turnovers. However, it was the Heat's trio of all-time greats-LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, and Chris Bosh-who left a lasting impression on the young Giannis.

Why it matters for Giannis Antetokounmpo

As Giannis reminisced about that game, he recalled the moment when LeBron James swiped the ball from him, leaving him overwhelmed. "I got drafted at 18 and came here. I saw LeBron up close, Wade, and all those guys, and I was like, 'Holy s-t, I gotta get better,'" he shared.

What comes next?

The experience served as a wake-up call for Giannis, who realized he had to work harder to reach the level of greatness he saw in the Heat's trio. "When you see stuff like that, you realize you've got to work. They show you the way. It's not hard. Just listen, keep your eyes open, and learn," Giannis said.

The memory of that game has stayed with Giannis, and he credits it with fueling his drive for greatness. "I enjoy the challenge. I enjoy getting better," he reckoned. "Obviously, I've accomplished a lot of things in my career, but one of my goals is to win another championship, and I really wanna do it."

As Giannis sets his eyes on reaching the NBA's peak once again with the Heat, he is eager to take on the challenge and prove himself against the same team that once left him in awe.

The road ahead

With his move to the Heat now official, Giannis is setting his sights on winning another championship. The onus is now on the franchise's godfather, Pat Riley, to weave magic and make some moves to give the Greek Freak the best team possible.
