Giannis Antetokounmpo’s Heat add Russell Westbrook to backcourt puzzle
Giannis Antetokounmpo’s Miami Heat are exploring a reunion with Russell Westbrook to fill a gaping hole in their backcourt.
The Heat locked in Giannis Antetokounmpo on July 1, 2026, giving Miami a frontcourt trio of Giannis, Bam Adebayo and Bobby Portis. That leaves the backcourt thin after Tyler Herro and Norman Powell left in free agency. The Heat added Tim Hardaway Jr. and Davion Mitchell, but many around the league still see a need for a true lead guard.
Gary Payton, the Hall of Famer and 2006 Heat champion, told reporters Westbrook would be “a really, really true point guard” to play alongside Giannis. Westbrook just wrapped a one-year, $3.6 million deal with the Sacramento Kings and could land a similar veteran-minimum pact in Miami. The Heat sit near the luxury-tax apron but still hold the non-taxpayer mid-level exception and minimum slots.
Westbrook, 37, averaged more points, rebounds and assists than Hardaway Jr. and Mitchell did in Sacramento, despite playing on a less competitive team. Payton pointed to his own late-career role in Miami’s 2006 title run as proof Westbrook could help push a contender over the top.
A projected lineup of Giannis, Adebayo, Westbrook, Andrew Wiggins and Hardaway Jr. would give Miami a five-out look with multiple creators. Westbrook’s burst in transition and mid-range scoring could ease the load on Giannis and Adebayo while keeping defenses honest. The Heat are also still chasing LeBron James, but Westbrook offers a ready-made veteran upgrade at guard if James lands elsewhere.
Pat Riley has long favored bringing in experienced hands late in their careers. Westbrook’s physical style and relentless motor could fit that culture, even if his role is limited to a sixth-man spark or spot starter. The risk is minimal: Miami can absorb the deal without stretching its books further.
The Heat are still chasing James, who remains open to several destinations. If James signs elsewhere, Westbrook becomes a realistic fallback. Miami could finalize a deal before the July moratorium lifts on July 7, 2026. Until then, the backcourt hunt stays wide open-and Giannis’s supporting cast inches closer to contention shape.
