Glenn Maxwell Scores 278 Runs

2026-06-29 · Glenn Maxwell · Match Report

Glenn Maxwell scored 278 runs for Victoria against New South Wales in the Sheffield Shield. He missed out on a triple century by 22 runs when he was bowled by Steve O'Keefe.

The visitors' standing in the game was further strengthened by Jon Holland and Chris Tremain, who took five wickets between themselves to leave NSW tottering at 125 for 5, trailing their visitors by 437 runs.

Resuming on 213, Maxwell marched purposely towards a triple hundred, slamming nine boundaries and a six in the morning session to take his innings tally to 36 and 4 respectively.

But just as the big milestone seemed doable, he was cleaned up by O'Keefe. Immediately afterwards Cameron White was involved in a mix-up with Matthew Short and was run-out for 66.

The wickets fell more frequently thereafter but a quickfire 45 from Tremain took the total to 562 for 9 before Aaron Finch declared.

NSW began resolutely with Nic Maddinson and Daniel Hughes sharing a 75-run opening stand. But Tremain removed the two in the space of five runs and the rest of the batsmen, including captain Moises Henriques, folded rather tamely to leave the side in a dire state.

**Brief scores: Victoria** 562/9 (Glenn Maxwell 278, Aaron Finch 76; Steve O'Keefe 3-128) lead **New South Wales** 125/5 (Daniel Hughes 44; Jon Holland 3-44) by **437 runs.**

Tasmania moved within five wickets of claiming their first win of the Sheffield Shield campaign despite a wobbly batting performance in the first half of the third day's play against hosts South Australia.

Captain George Bailey struck a fine 86 but the rest of the Tasmania's line-up failed to capitalise on starts as the visitors folded for 244 in their second innings, with an overall lead of 385.

Having been bowled out for 141 in their first innings, South Australia needed a significantly better performance if they were to get anywhere close to the target.

They however came up against an inspired opening spell from Gabe Bell, who knocked over both the openers with just 24 runs on the board.

Travis Head, the only bright spot in SA's first innings, scored a quick 31 in a 60-run stand with Callum Ferguson but was dismissed by Rainbird in a massive setback to the hosts.

Jackson Bird then added the wickets of Jake Lehmann and Joe Mennie before stumps to put Tasmania within touching distance of victory.

**Brief scores: Tasmania** 282 & 244 (George Bailey 86; Kane Richardson 4-30, Adam Zampa 3-85) lead **South Australia** 141 & 124/5 (Callum Ferguson 46*; Gabe Bell 2-16) by **262 runs.**
