Gretchen Walsh Chases Records in 100m Butterfly
Gretchen Walsh is chasing big names in her quest for the most all-time top performances in a single event. On her last outing at the Fort Lauderdale Aquatic Center, Walsh delivered a pair of world-record performances.
Gretchen Walsh ripped a world mark of 55.09 during preliminary action in the 100-meter butterfly, and then took the global standard down to 54.60 in the final.
The 23-year-old is coming off a 55.22 performance in the 100 fly at last month’s China Open, positioning her to produce additional speedy times in Fort Lauderdale.
From an all-time perspective, Walsh needs a pair of sub-55.48 efforts to increase her total to the 13-fastest swims in the history of the 100 butterfly. Only Great Britain’s Adam Peaty and the United States’ Katie Ledecky own more top times than Walsh in a single event.
Gretchen Walsh has been that dominant in her prime event, with her world record sitting 0.88 quicker than Sweden’s Sarah Sjostrom, the No. 2 performer of all-time. Peaty holds the 14-fastest times in the 100 breaststroke while Ledecky possesses the 12-fastest marks in the 1500 freestyle.
Ledecky is entered in the 1500 freestyle on Wednesday and needs a time faster than 15:31.79 to raise her tally to 13. Gretchen Walsh is positioned to make a strong push for the record, given her recent performance.
The University of Virginia product will look to deliver another impressive outing at the Fort Lauderdale Aquatic Center. With her world record in the 100-meter butterfly, Walsh is a force to be reckoned with in the swimming world.
Gretchen Walsh's dominance in the 100 butterfly is a testament to her hard work and dedication. As she continues to push the boundaries of what is possible in the pool, fans can expect to see more exciting performances from this talented athlete.
