Harry Kane Pushes Ballon d’Or Race After Carragher’s Bold Call

2026-07-08 · Harry Kane · Opinion

**Harry Kane** was named the centerpiece of a new Ballon d’Or debate on 5 July 2026 after former England defender Jamie Carragher declared the striker the year’s most deserving player.

Carragher told *TeleFootball* that Kane’s goal tally, assist count and leadership for Tottenham Hotspur and England over the past twelve months outshine any rival. He highlighted the striker’s 23 league goals, 7 assists and a crucial World Cup qualifier brace in March, arguing those numbers merit the world’s top individual award.

The former Liverpool back warned that the award often follows the winning nation’s star in a World Cup year. "Unfortunately, he probably won’t because in a World cup year it is bound to go to the star player of the winning nation," Carragher said, pointing to the historic bias toward tournament champions.

Carragher also questioned England’s ability to mount a serious challenge on the global stage. After a 2‑1 loss to Denmark in the Euro 2026 qualifiers on 12 June, he argued there is “nothing to support” optimism for a deep World Cup run, which could further diminish Kane’s ballot.

Even with the World Cup hurdle, Kane remains a front‑runner in the Ballon d’Or conversation. His consistency for Tottenham, including a hat‑trick against Liverpool on 28 April, keeps him in the spotlight. If England reaches the later stages of the tournament, his profile could surge, but Carragher’s comments remind fans that individual glory often rides on team success.

The shortlist will be announced in early October, giving Kane a few months to add more highlights. A strong showing at the 2026 World Cup, should England progress, could rewrite the narrative Carragher set out. Until then, the striker’s season‑long output remains the strongest argument for a historic individual award.
