Hubert Hurkacz stuns Roger Federer in straight-sets Wimbledon upset to reach semi-finals
World No 18 Hubert Hurkacz crushed Roger Federer 6-3 7-6(4) 6-0 on Centre Court at Wimbledon on 8 July 2021. The 24-year-old Pole ended Federer’s quest for a ninth Wimbledon title and a record 21st Grand Slam crown in one hour and 48 minutes. Hurkacz will face Matteo Berrettini in the semi-finals after the Italian beat Felix Auger-Aliassime 6-3 5-7 7-5 6-3.
Hurkacz fired 36 winners and made just 12 unforced errors against the eight-time Wimbledon champion. Federer, 40 next month, was broken 10 times and lost a set to love at Wimbledon for the first time in 22 visits. The Swiss, playing his 53rd major quarter-final, had beaten Hurkacz’s idol on court but crumbled under pressure.
But the Pole stayed fearless. "I wasn’t daunted by the legend across the net," Hurkacz said after the match. "I just wanted to play my game." The win marked his biggest career triumph and his first Grand Slam quarter-final.
The victory catapulted Hurkacz into the Wimbledon semi-finals and proved he can beat all-time greats. Earlier in the tournament he rallied from two sets down to oust world No 2 Daniil Medvedev in five sets. Now he stands two wins away from his first Grand Slam final.
For Federer, the loss raises fresh questions about his future. He refused to rush a decision after Wimbledon, saying he’d take a few days to reflect. "I’m happy I made it this far," he told reporters. "But at my age you’re never sure what’s around the corner."
Hurkacz will face Berrettini in the semi-finals on Friday. Novak Djokovic, who beat Martin Fucsovics earlier, now stands two wins away from his 20th Grand Slam title. Djokovic would join Federer and Rafael Nadal in that elite club if he prevails.
The Pole’s run has already rewritten his career narrative. From a first major quarter-final to a semi-final berth in one week, Hurkacz has announced himself among the sport’s rising forces. His next step? A place in his first Slam final and a shot at the title.
