Iker Casillas Faces Uncertain Football Future After Heart Attack

2026-06-24 · Iker Casillas · Player Focus

Iker Casillas suffered a heart attack in May and his football future is uncertain.

The Porto goalkeeper was discharged from hospital less than a week after being admitted.

Iker Casillas had a heart attack and was rushed to hospital, causing shock in the football world.

The former Real Madrid captain was in a stable condition and was discharged from hospital quickly.

Casillas feels better but it's unclear if he can continue playing football at an elite level.

Initial responses from medical professionals are positive, suggesting Casillas could return to action.

Porto doctor Pulga says Casillas' return will depend on many factors, including medication and physical exercise.

Cardiologist Juan Antonio Corbalan is less optimistic, saying Casillas may not play professional football again.

Iker Casillas' agent, Carlos Cutropia, says retirement is not something they're worrying about.

Some footballers have recovered from major surgeries to return to the pitch, including Cristiano Ronaldo.

Ronaldo had minor heart surgery as a teenager before going on to break records with Manchester United and Real Madrid.

And Republic of Ireland international Shane Duffy underwent life-saving surgery on his liver in 2010.

Duffy now plays in the Premier League for Brighton, giving hope to Casillas.

But each of these examples were in their teens when they had their surgeries, unlike Casillas.

Former Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes has urged Casillas to hang up his gloves for good.

Valdes wrote on his Instagram page, encouraging Casillas to be a "white lion" on the sideline.

So the football world waits to see if Iker Casillas will return to the pitch or retire.

Casillas himself is unsure, saying he doesn't know what will happen in the future.

But for now, he's just grateful to be alive and feeling better.
