Iker Casillas Suffers Career-Ending Injury After Heart Attack
Iker Casillas will not play football again after suffering a heart attack, according to cardiologist Juan Antonio Corbalan.
The Spanish World Cup winning goalkeeper had a myocardial infarction in training with Porto on Wednesday.
Iker Casillas was rushed to hospital for surgery after feeling unwell during training.
He had an intense training session on Tuesday and another one on Wednesday morning.
The heart attack has ended Iker Casillas' football career, as he cannot play with a coronary stent.
Porto's medical team quickly got Iker Casillas to hospital, where he had successful surgery.
Iker Casillas will make a full recovery, but he can no longer be a professional athlete, said Juan Antonio Corbalan.
He will return to living a normal life, but football is no longer an option.
And Iker Casillas' agent Carlos Cutropia said the goalkeeper had no indication that anything was wrong prior to the incident.
But the cardiologist's verdict is clear: Iker Casillas' football career is over.
So the 37-year-old goalkeeper will have to look to the future, without football.
Iker Casillas shared a picture of himself smiling from his hospital bed on Wednesday evening.
Porto tweeted to inform fans that he was on the mend, writing: "Casillas is now doing well, the cardiac problem has been resolved.
Always together, Go Iker."
The Spanish radio station COPE reported that Iker Casillas' agent Carlos Cutropia was grateful to Porto's medical team.
He told COPE: “We’re extremely grateful to Porto’s medical team who got Iker to hospital so quickly.”
Iker Casillas' career has been marked by many highs, including winning the World Cup with Spain.
But now, his football career is at an end, due to the heart attack.
The coronary stent means he cannot play football, said Juan Antonio Corbalan.
Iker Casillas will have to come to terms with this new reality, and look to the future.
