Isack Hadjar Delivers Crucial Tow for Max Verstappen in Belgian GP Qualifying

Isack Hadjar's impressive qualifying performance helped Max Verstappen secure a second-place finish on the front row for the Belgian GP on Saturday, 18 June.

What happened?

Verstappen's teammate, Isack Hadjar, provided the Dutchman with a handy tow on his final run down to the Bus Stop chicane at Spa-Francorchamps, allowing him to secure a crucial second spot on the grid. Initially, it looked like Verstappen had got too close to Hadjar on his final run, but the four-time world champion was pleased with Red Bull's execution of the move.

Why it matters for Isack Hadjar

Hadjar finished qualifying in P10, with his start at the back of the grid on Sunday already confirmed. The 21-year-old will take new power unit elements for the Belgian GP, beyond the allowed allocation. Despite his disappointing qualifying result, Hadjar's efforts earned praise from Verstappen, who acknowledged the French driver's crucial role in his qualifying performance.

What comes next?

Speaking post-qualifying, Verstappen reflected on the tow, saying: "It was definitely helping me, otherwise I would not be standing here. Otherwise I think I would be like P6, or something." He praised Hadjar's performance, saying: "So, I think Isack today, knowing that has to start at the back of the grid, he did a really good job giving me a tow in the final sector, and that's why we're standing right here." Verstappen expressed his gratitude to the Red Bull team, saying: "I think the car has been quite decent the whole weekend, not on the level maybe that Kimi was doing. But we're happy to be on the front row with how we executed as a team."

Hopes for Sunday's race

On his hopes for Sunday's race, Verstappen said: "It's always tough around here with the tyres and the long runs. I'll just do my best and see if we can hang in there or not." With Hadjar starting at the back of the grid, Verstappen will be looking to make the most of his qualifying performance and secure a strong result on Sunday.

Final thoughts

The Belgian GP is shaping up to be a thrilling event, with Verstappen and Red Bull looking strong on the grid. Hadjar's efforts will be crucial in helping his teammate secure a good result on Sunday, and the French driver will be looking to make a statement in his qualifying performance.
