Jack Della Maddalena Backs Max Holloway to Dominate 170 lbs Division

2026-07-14 · Jack Della Maddalena · Player Focus

Jack Della Maddalena, the former UFC welterweight champion, has backed Max Holloway to dominate the 170 lbs division after his impressive win at UFC 329. Holloway defeated Conor McGregor via first-round TKO when McGregor injured his knee just 69 seconds into the fight.

Holloway made his welterweight debut at UFC 329, facing off against Conor McGregor. The fight ended quickly, with Holloway securing a first-round TKO victory after McGregor suffered a knee injury. Despite the short duration, Holloway showcased his skills, moving well inside the Octagon and filling out his welterweight frame effectively.

As Holloway's training partner, Jack Della Maddalena has firsthand experience of his abilities. Speaking to Full Send MMA, Della Maddalena expressed his belief that Holloway can clean up the 170 lbs division if he chooses to stay there. 'Man, I was thinking he was gonna take over the fight from the get-go,' Della Maddalena said. 'Just being able to train with someone like Max, it was incredible. I thought he was going to do well, and I think he would do well: like, he would clean up 170 if he wanted to.'

The question now is whether Holloway will remain at 170 lbs. Della Maddalena believes he should, but the decision ultimately lies with Holloway and the UFC. If Holloway wants a trilogy bout against McGregor, he will need to stay at welterweight. McGregor is expected to recover from his likely ACL tear by 2027. Alternatively, if the UFC wants Holloway to face lightweight champion Justin Gaethje in a rematch, he would have to move back down in weight.

Regardless of the weight class, Holloway is expected to face another big name in his next bout. His performance at UFC 329 has certainly raised expectations for his future in the UFC.
