Jalen Brunson admits Knicks face tougher challenge defending 2026 NBA title

Jalen Brunson knows the New York Knicks’ 2026-27 season won’t be a repeat of their championship run. The reigning NBA Finals MVP admitted the pressure of defending a title is heavier than chasing one.

What’s changing for the Knicks

Brunson, the Knicks’ All-Star guard, called the shift a “different” challenge. *“It’ll be different, for sure,”* he said. *“Obviously, for the first eight years, I went through disappointment, losing at the end of the season. Now, winning, I think it’s an even bigger challenge.”*

The Knicks’ status as a big-market team already drew scrutiny. Now, every opponent will bring extra intensity. *“Like you said, there’s a target on your back now,”* Brunson said. *“Players and teams have changed and gotten better. So how are we going to evolve as a team?”*

Brunson isn’t panicking. The Knicks still have him and Karl-Anthony Towns as their All-Star duo. OG Anunoby and Josh Hart are improving. They re-signed Jordan Clarkson, Jose Alvarado, and Landry Shamet. They also added Andre Drummond to replace Mitchell Robinson.

*“How are we going to figure out what’s the next step for us?”* Brunson asked. *“That’s going to be a really important question coming into training camp. How are we going to be better? How are we going to literally look at the trophy, know that that was last year and then forget about it?”*

Brunson’s tone mixed excitement with realism. *“I’m excited for the challenge,”* he said. But he knows the league won’t cut the Knicks any slack. Every team will bring its best effort to dethrone them.
