Edwards, a four-time All-Star, dismissed his own candidacy for the NBA’s top honor. Instead, he pointed to Brunson’s postseason dominance, including his 32.6 points per game in the Finals against the San Antonio Spurs. The Knicks guard also swept the ESPY Awards, winning Best Athlete in Men’s Sports, Best NBA Player, and Best Championship Performance.

Brunson’s 2026 playoff performance cemented his legacy. He averaged 25.5 points and 7.8 assists en route to the Eastern Conference title before elevating his game in the Finals. His 45-point outburst in Game 5 sealed the championship, earning him unanimous Finals MVP honors.

Overcoming Injury to Win It All
