James Wade's 2008 World Matchplay Final Record Under Threat in 2026

James Wade's long-standing World Matchplay final record could be under threat as the 2026 tournament begins in Blackpool this weekend. The English darts legend set a benchmark in 2008 with a 109.47 average against Phil Taylor, a mark only surpassed by Taylor himself in 2013.

What's at stake in the 2026 World Matchplay?

The second Triple Crown event of the year kicks off on Saturday, with defending champion Luke Littler aiming to become the youngest player to win back-to-back titles. Littler's 107.24 average in last year's final against Wade was the third-highest in tournament history, just behind Wade's 2008 performance.

Luke Humphries, Littler's World Cup teammate, emerges as the main challenger. The 2023 winner averaged over 100 in all five matches that year, including a 101 against Michael van Gerwen in the final. Humphries has since lost four major finals to Littler but gained confidence after beating him in the US Darts Masters final in June.

Why James Wade's record matters

Wade's 2008 performance remains one of the most impressive in World Matchplay history. Only Phil Taylor's 111.23 average in 2013 has surpassed it. Littler's 107.24 last year was the closest anyone has come to Wade's mark since then.

The 2026 field includes other contenders like Wessel Nijman, who could make his major breakthrough. Nijman's odds of 10/1 reflect his potential rather than proven major success.

What comes next for the tournament?

The Winter Gardens in Blackpool will host the event, with Littler as the favorite to defend his title. Humphries, at 5/1 odds, looks to reclaim the trophy he won in 2023. The tournament runs from July 19-27, with the final scheduled for Sunday night.

James Wade's record may stand for another year, but the rising stars of darts are getting closer to matching his historic performance.
