Jasper Philipsen reinstated after Tour de France relegation drama

Jasper Philipsen was relegated then reinstated after finishing third in the bunch sprint on Stage 11 of the Tour de France on Wednesday, July 10, 2024. The Alpecin-Premier Tech rider was initially punished for an alleged move into a Picnic PostNL rider in the final 500 meters before the decision was reversed.

What happened during the sprint?

Philipsen crossed the line in third place behind Søren Wærenskjold (Uno-X Mobility) and Olav Kooij (Decathlon CMA CGM). However, race officials later relegated him for an alleged dangerous maneuver. The Belgian sprinter defended himself, stating, *I didn’t do anything on purpose or anything wrong.*

Why was the decision reversed?

After reviewing additional footage, the race jury reconsidered their initial call. Christoph Roodhooft, Alpecin-Premier Tech’s head sports director, confirmed the reversal, saying, *It is better the way it is. I think it is only fair.*

Philipsen admitted the sprint was chaotic, with riders slowing dramatically before the finish. *Everyone stopped and looked at each other with 400 meters to go,* he said. Despite the confusion, he remained positive about his performance.

What does this mean for Philipsen’s Tour?

The reinstatement means Philipsen retains his third-place finish, keeping him in contention for future sprint stages. *The Tour is not over yet,* he noted, hinting at more opportunities ahead.

Team manager Philip Roodhooft acknowledged the inconsistency in race jury decisions but dismissed suggestions of bias against Philipsen. *I don’t think anybody has a special eye on Jasper,* he said.

Philipsen’s performance marked his first strong sprint result of this year’s Tour. *We had a positive feeling about my sprint,* he added, signaling progress after earlier struggles.
