Jasper Philipsen unveils new Shimano S-Phyre shoes at Tour de France
Jasper Philipsen has stepped into the spotlight at the 2025 Tour de France by showing off a fresh pair of custom Shimano S-Phyre shoes.
The Belgian sprinter posted images on social media on 12 July, teasing the new footwear ahead of Stage 10 in Orléans. The shoes feature a bold red-and-white colorway that Philipsen has made his signature, but subtle design tweaks suggest Shimano’s latest tech push.
Shimano’s S-Phyre line is built for stiffness and power transfer, and Philipsen’s custom pair includes micro-adjustments to the upper and outsole. The team behind the Alpecin-Deceuninck squad confirmed the shoes arrived just days before the peloton rolled into Orléans. Philipsen has raced in S-Phyre models since 2023, but this iteration looks sharper-and lighter.
For Philipsen, every gram counts in bunch sprints where margins are measured in bike lengths. The new shoes drop about 20 grams versus last year’s stock version, according to Shimano’s press notes. That’s enough to shave milliseconds off his pedal stroke recovery between pedal strokes, a tiny edge in a sport where seconds decide podiums.
Philipsen’s Instagram post drew 200,000 likes in under three hours, with rivals quick to weigh in. Mathieu van der Poel, his Alpecin-Deceuninck teammate and frequent lead-out man, replied with a laughing emoji. Outside the team, rivals like Fabio Jakobsen and Dylan Groenewegen kept their comments muted-no one wants to tip their hand before the race.
Stage 10 features a flat run into Orléans, a textbook Philipsen finish. He’ll toe the line with the new shoes and a fresh set of ambitions. Whether the tweaks translate to another sprint win remains to be seen, but the Belgian isn’t waiting for the verdict. He’s already pedaling forward.
