Jayden Daniels dragged into Brandon Aiyuk’s messy 49ers exit saga

Jayden Daniels became an unwilling centerpiece of Brandon Aiyuk’s offseason meltdown after the 49ers wide receiver launched a social-media broadside at the Washington Commanders quarterback. The spat capped a months-long standoff between Aiyuk and San Francisco that began when a fan yelled at Daniels during a game and Aiyuk took offense at his friend’s lack of public support.

Aiyuk, still recovering from a torn ACL and MCL suffered in 2024, has been at odds with the 49ers since the team voided the final $61.5 million of his four-year, $120 million extension. The club cited alleged failures to meet rehab milestones, and Aiyuk cut off contact, landing him on the reserve/left squad list. On 18 Jun 2025, Aiyuk escalated the dispute by attacking Daniels-his self-described friend-on social media, accusing the quarterback of cowardice for not publicly backing him.

The fallout isn’t just Aiyuk’s problem. Former 49ers safety Donte Whitner declared on his podcast *The Grit Code* that Aiyuk “sealed his fate” by burning bridges with Daniels. Whitner argued that Daniels was Aiyuk’s only remaining leverage inside the league, and that the wideout’s public attacks on the Commanders QB and his mother erased any chance of a return. “And for Brandon Aiyuk to not understand that and go on social media and attack Jayden Daniels and his mom, you sealed your fate,” Whitner said.

Whitner’s bleak forecast isn’t legally binding. Aiyuk remains under contract with San Francisco on the reserve/left squad list, not drawing a paycheck and not occupying a roster spot. The 49ers can’t release him until he files for reinstatement, which Aiyuk has vowed never to do. Until then, the standoff stays frozen-unless another team gambles on a one-year veteran-minimum flier after San Francisco finally cuts ties.
