Jaylen Brown trade rocks Sixers’ first offseason under Gansey: LeBron wait begins

Jaylen Brown was traded to the Philadelphia 76ers on 15 Jul 2026, ending his 10-year run with the Boston Celtics and sending shockwaves through the NBA.

What happened?

Mike Gansey, the Sixers’ president of basketball operations, confirmed the blockbuster Jaylen Brown trade in an interview on 15 Jul 2026. The move came after Boston’s offer package for Brown became public following Giannis Antetokounmpo’s trade to the Miami Heat instead of the Celtics. Gansey said the Sixers “never would have envisioned” landing Brown in his first offseason.

Gansey arrived from the Cleveland Cavaliers expecting to build around Joel Embiid and Paul George, both on max deals. But after drafting Labaron Philon Jr. at No. 22 and missing out on Antetokounmpo, the Sixers pivoted. Gansey called Boston to explore options. “Maybe there isn’t,” he said. “But you just make that call.”

Why it matters for Jaylen Brown

Brown averaged 28.7 points last season and finished sixth in MVP voting. Gansey called him a player who “would really, really help us and add to our group.” Brown felt “shock” after a decade in Boston, Gansey said. The Sixers see him as a cornerstone piece.

Gansey also praised LeBron James, now 41, for playing at a high level. “He’s smart as heck,” Gansey said. “He’s going to figure it out and talk to his family.” The Sixers are waiting on James’ free agency decision.

What comes next?

The Sixers drafted Philon Jr., a guard from Alabama, and watched VJ Edgecombe in FIBA qualifiers. Gansey called the offseason “a whirlwind.” He admitted nothing is certain. “You plan all you want,” he said. “But you just don’t know.”

Gansey said the Sixers will chase shooting, depth, and athleticism. Brown’s arrival changes the roster. The East just got louder.

How the trade went down

Gansey learned the trade tactic from Koby Altman and Dan Gilbert in Cleveland. He kept calling Boston. “They don’t say no,” he said. Conversations kept going. Next thing, the deal was in motion. The Sixers flew to LA for free agency. The pieces fell into place.

Gansey said Brown’s fit is clear. The Sixers’ pursuit of LeBron James is next. Whatever James decides, the Sixers are ready.
