Jimmie Johnson's Brother Embroiled in $175,000 Fraud Lawsuit

Jimmie Johnson's brother, Jarit Johnson, is at the center of a $175,000 fraud lawsuit that could damage the seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion's reputation.

What happened?

Jarit Johnson, a former off-road and stock car racer, was hired by British national Lee Chapman to restore a 1967 Chevrolet Chevelle Coupe in 2021. Chapman paid $144,000 upfront, expecting the work to be completed within a reasonable timeframe. However, Jarit continually delayed the project and ignored Chapman's requests for updates.

Why it matters for Jimmie Johnson

The lawsuit directly threatens Jimmie Johnson's spotless reputation in the NASCAR garage. Over two decades, Jimmie Johnson has built a revered brand, and his brother's actions risk dragging him into a legal battle. The lawsuit claims Jarit used the Johnson name to scam a customer, which could tarnish Jimmie's reputation.

What comes next?

Chapman is seeking at least $175,000 in damages, including $37,000 for parts that were not found in Jarit's workshop. The lawsuit also claims that Jarit's restoration business does not even have a public phone listing. Chapman removed the Chevelle and its parts from Jarit's workshop on June 9, earlier this year, and is now claiming damages.

In a series of messages recorded in the lawsuit, Jarit promised to finish the car in 60 days on May 1, 2025, but failed to meet the deadline. Chapman's frustration grew, and he eventually sent a message on December 9, 2024, stating, "I have $120,000 of my hard-earned money out there. Where is my car? I am sick of this. I really am. Someone buy me out. I want out of this project now. I am going to have a breakdown."

Jimmie Johnson himself is not accused of being part of this reportedly failed restoration project. However, the lawsuit's focus on his brother's actions threatens to tarnish his reputation in the NASCAR garage.

The case is currently ongoing in Iredell County Superior Court in North Carolina.
