Jimmie Johnson Joins TNT as Analyst for $1 Million NASCAR Showdown
**Jimmie Johnson** is set to debut as a studio analyst for TNT Sports' NASCAR In‑Season Challenge, beginning with the Toyota/Save Mart 350 at Sonoma Raceway on June 28. The seven‑time Cup Series champion will also appear at North Wilkesboro Speedway on July 19 and the Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis on July 26, bringing his racing perspective to a $1 million single‑elimination tournament.
The In‑Season Challenge is a five‑race, knockout‑style competition that pits 32 drivers against each other for a $1 million prize. Races are held at Sonoma, Chicagoland, Atlanta, North Wilkesboro and Indianapolis, with each event counting toward the bracket. The format, introduced last year, adds a playoff‑like intensity to the regular season and draws heightened fan interest.
Since retiring from full‑time competition after the 2020 season, Johnson has dabbled in broadcasting, most notably with NBC’s Indy 500 coverage in 2021 and 2024. His move to TNT gives the network a former champion’s viewpoint, which fans say can deepen the commentary. "Joining TNT Sports is an opportunity that truly energizes me," Johnson said in a statement, highlighting his excitement to share racing insight alongside legends like Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Steve Letarte.
Marty Smith will take over as TNT’s pre‑ and post‑race host, working with Earnhardt Jr., Letarte and Jamie McMurray. The broadcast booth will retain Adam Alexander, Earnhardt Jr. and Letarte for race calls. TNT’s EVP Craig Barry noted the expansion of the studio crew as a way to bring fans closer to the sport, emphasizing the network’s commitment to fresh voices and deeper analysis.
The analyst stint aligns with Johnson’s ongoing involvement in the sport, including his ownership stake in Legacy Motor Club and occasional race entries like the 2024 Coca‑Cola 600. By appearing on three of the five Challenge races, Johnson maintains a visible presence while exploring media opportunities. His schedule will see him travel from Sonoma to North Wilkesboro and then to Indianapolis, a demanding but rewarding itinerary for a former driver turned commentator.
The first broadcast featuring Johnson airs on June 28 for the Sonoma race. He returns on July 19 for the North Wilkesboro event and wraps up the series at the Brickyard 400 on July 26. Each appearance will be part of TNT’s studio segment, offering pre‑race insights, driver interviews and post‑race analysis. Viewers can tune in to catch Johnson’s commentary as the $1 million prize chase unfolds.
