Jimmie Johnson Races Near Hometown Ahead of Final NASCAR Season

2026-07-13 · Jimmie Johnson · Player Focus

Jimmie Johnson raced near his El Cajon hometown on June 21, 2026, finishing 28th in the Anduril 250 at Naval Base Coronado: his second Cup Series start this season as he nears the end of his legendary career.

Corey Heim won his first NASCAR Cup Series race on June 21, 2026, after a late battle with Tyler Reddick and a crash that eliminated favorite Shane van Gisbergen. The 3.4-mile street course hosted its debut event at an active military base. Johnson, driving for Legacy Motor Club, completed all 75 laps but struggled for track position, crossing the line 28th: his best result since February’s Daytona 500.

At 50, Johnson is racing with clear finality. He confirmed to reporters he plans to retire after next year’s Daytona 500, making this weekend’s appearance near his childhood home one of his last chances to compete in front of family and longtime fans. He called the Coronado street circuit a unique opportunity NASCAR never imagined when he started racing. His only other 2026 Cup start was a 29th-place finish at Daytona.

Johnson also competed in Friday’s Truck Series race at the same venue, finishing 30th for Tricon Garage. He has no scheduled Cup starts beyond Coronado until the 2027 Daytona 500, which he has named as his official retirement race. With only one full-time Cup start left on his calendar, every lap now carries weight. The Cup Series heads to Sonoma Raceway next week, but Johnson won’t be there: his next on-track appearance remains unannounced.

Johnson said he never expected to race at a temporary street circuit like Coronado, especially with so many of his early tracks gone. He praised NASCAR for expanding into unconventional venues, calling it smart and meaningful. He didn’t mention wins or records: just gratitude. "It’s not about the finish," he told reporters. "It’s about being here, now."

The race marked the first time NASCAR held a Cup event on an active military base. Heim’s win stole headlines, but Johnson’s quiet presence: 30 minutes from where he grew up: resonated deeper with longtime followers.
