Why the Switch Could Work for Mir

Mir’s move to Gresini Ducati mirrors Marquez’s own transition from Honda to Ducati ahead of the 2024 season. The reigning world champion, who left Honda after two winless years and injury setbacks, sees parallels in Mir’s situation.

“Joan Mir is a world champion, so he can do what he wants, especially because he is super-talented,” Marquez said at the German Grand Prix. The pair train together in motocross and flat track, and Marquez describes Mir as a natural rider.

Pressure vs. Performance

Marquez suggests a satellite team like Gresini could reduce pressure on Mir, allowing him to focus on racing. “Sometimes it’s what you need in your moment of your career,” he said. “In a satellite team, you have much less money, but much less pressure.”

Mir’s ninth MotoGP season will see him leave Honda, where he joined in 2023 after Suzuki’s exit. His best results at Honda came in 2023, but he has yet to match his championship-winning form.
