John McEnroe roars with laughter as Linda Nosková jokes 'must be the beer' at Wimbledon

2026-07-13 · John McEnroe · Match Report

John McEnroe couldn’t keep a straight face on Centre Court on Friday when Linda Nosková cracked a joke about Czech tennis success that had the seven-time Grand Slam champion in stitches.

Nosková made McEnroe laugh during her post-semi-final interview at Wimbledon on 11 July after beating Marta Kostyuk to reach her first major final. The Czech world No. 12 sealed a Czech-only championship showdown by downing Kostyuk 6-2, 6-4 in 74 minutes, setting up a Saturday final against Karolína Muchová.

After the win, Nosková fielded McEnroe’s question about why Czech players keep shining at Wimbledon. She fired back, “If we’re going this way, it must be the beer,” drawing laughter from the crowd and a quick “Great answer” from McEnroe.

The exchange became one of the tournament’s lightest moments before Nosková pivoted to a more serious take. She credited Czech tennis’s deep tradition, pointing to legends like Martina Navratilova and Jana Novotná and recent winners Petra Kvitová, Markéta Vondroušová and Barbora Krejčíková.

McEnroe, a Wimbledon icon himself, has spent decades on Centre Court as a player and pundit. His reaction to Nosková’s quip showed how the tournament keeps blending star power with spontaneous joy.

The moment also spotlighted McEnroe’s role as a Wimbledon fixture. His seven titles and fiery reputation make him a natural voice for the All England Club’s biggest stages.

Nosková will face Muchová on Saturday, guaranteeing a first-time Wimbledon champion. Muchová needed a match-point save to beat Coco Gauff 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 in a dramatic semi-final that lasted 2 hours 38 minutes.

Regardless of Saturday’s result, Czech tennis will have its latest champion. Nosková has already sealed a career-best run, while Muchová aims to add to her 2023 French Open semifinal run.

The final marks the latest chapter in a Czech surge that has seen at least one woman from the country reach the Wimbledon final in five of the last six years.
