Jon Rahm Calls for Change to Golfing Calendar Ahead of The Open

2026-07-16 · Jon Rahm · Player Focus

Jon Rahm, a two-time major winner, is calling for a change to the golfing calendar ahead of The Open at Royal Birkdale. The Spaniard, who is one of the favourites to win the championship, believes that the current schedule does not provide enough opportunities for links golf.

Rahm, who has finished inside the top 10 in three of his last five starts at The Open, thinks that the scarcity of links golf events is a key factor in its special nature. "Yes, we got The Open, the Scottish Open and sometimes the Irish Open. Not always. I feel like two and a half or three events is not enough for where golf started," he said.

Rahm's comments come as he prepares to compete in The Open, a tournament he has been eager to win for some time. "This is always an emotional answer for me. I have been very fortunate to win majors but to join Seve on that one and to get to three, which would put me second in the Spanish golfers list as far as majors go, to get one step closer to a Grand Slam which is a lot," he said.

Rahm's desire to win The Open is not just about personal achievement; it would also be a significant milestone in his career. A win at Royal Birkdale would move him to within a PGA Championship victory of completing the Career Grand Slam. "To draw my name on the Claret Jug would be inspirational," he said.

Rahm's comments on the golfing calendar are not just about the number of links golf events, but also about the timing of them. He believes that links golf events should only take place in the summer, when the weather conditions are more favourable. "It could only be in summer, obviously, and we have other events going on but if we could have a few more events in links I think it would be better for everybody," he said.

Rahm's performance at The Open will be closely watched, not just because of his own ambitions, but also because of the significance of the tournament. The Open is one of the most prestigious golf tournaments in the world, and a win for Rahm would be a major achievement.

Rahm's recent performance at the Scottish Open was a good omen for his chances at The Open. He played extremely well after getting off to an awful start, and will hope that the opening round at Royal Birkdale will be a similar story.

Rahm's comments on the golfing calendar are a reflection of his passion for the sport and his desire to see it grow and develop. He believes that by providing more opportunities for links golf, the sport can become more exciting and challenging for players.

Rahm's performance at The Open will be closely watched, and his comments on the golfing calendar are a reminder of the importance of this tournament in the golfing calendar.
