Jorge Martín: 'I won't lead the championship for long at this rate'

2026-07-13 · Jorge Martín · Club News

Jorge Martín extends his MotoGP championship lead despite a disappointing performance in Germany, where he finished fifth on 18 Jun.

Jorge Martín's factory Aprilia team struggled to find pace at the Sachsenring, with the Spaniard finishing 11 seconds behind winner Marc Marquez. Despite the pressure from Francesco Bagnaia late in the race, Martin managed to hold onto fifth place. This performance was just another example of the Aprilia team's struggles, which began after Martin's perfect weekend at Le Mans in May.

Martin's championship lead has grown from seven points over Marco Bezzecchi to 14 points over Ai Ogura, but he's aware that this is largely due to his competitors' mistakes. Bezzecchi is enduring a terrible run, and was ruled out of the Sachsenring weekend by a qualifying crash. Ogura is only just getting into his stride in terms of big points hauls, while Marquez is still catching up from injury problems and missed races earlier in the season.

Martin is determined to find the speed and stay ahead in the championship. "I might be leading now, but if I continue making races like this one, I won't be in the lead for long," he said after the race. "For sure, we did a great first part of the season. I'm happy to be leading, obviously, because it's always a nice feeling, but... now we need to find the speed." Martin is aware that the potential is high, but he's struggling to find the right bike set-up. "I know that the potential is high. I was super confident in the first part of the season, then in the last few races I've been struggling with the speed. So we need to analyse well what happened and maybe go back to that bike [set-up] because I was feeling much better."

Martin is happy to be leading the championship, but he's aware that it's not just down to his own results. "Maybe I'm leading more [because of] the mistakes of the rest than from my results, but I'm leading! So we have to continue like this." The challenge is good, and everything is super open, according to Martin. He's looking forward to the second part of the season, and is confident that his team can find the speed and stay ahead.

Martin's next challenge is the upcoming MotoGP summer break, where he'll be looking to recharge and refocus. He's already set his sights on the second part of the season, and is confident that his team can find the speed and stay ahead. With the championship still wide open, Martin knows that he'll have to be at his best if he wants to stay ahead of the competition.
