Justin Gaethje compared to rising UFC star Luke Riley after Paddy Pimblett’s claim
Justin Gaethje now has a new name to watch in the UFC lightweight division after Paddy Pimblett’s bold post-fight claim on Saturday night.
Pimblett, who beat Benoit Saint-Denis by submission in 52 seconds at UFC 329, said his 14-0 teammate Luke Riley hits harder than Gaethje. The Liverpudlian also predicted Riley could become UFC champion within 18 months.
Pimblett made the comparison during his UFC 329 post-fight press conference on July 12, 2026. He said he’s fought Gaethje and sparred Riley, and insists Riley’s power surpasses the American’s.
“I’ve fought Justin Gaethje, and I’ve sparred Luke Riley, and Luke Riley hits harder than Justin Gaethje,” Pimblett told reporters. “People are gonna get to know that over the next few months because he’s going to stay consistent.”
Gaethje remains a top-five lightweight contender and a fan favorite. Pimblett’s comment puts Riley in the conversation as a potential future rival for Gaethje-or even a future title challenger.
Riley’s Thai boxing background and composure drew Pimblett’s praise. The 31-year-old Liverpudlian sees Riley as a future star, comparing him directly to Gaethje’s explosive style.
Pimblett believes Riley will climb the rankings fast. After a first-round knockout over Kai Kamaka III at UFC 329, Riley’s stock is rising.
Pimblett said Riley’s Thai boxing roots-starting at age eight in Thailand stadiums-give him elite composure. “He’s gonna be a superstar,” Pimblett added.
Gaethje’s next fight remains unclear. Pimblett, fresh off his win, called out the division’s top names, including Gaethje, Ilia Topuria, Arman Tsarukyan, and Charles Oliveira.
Pimblett wants one more fight in 2026. Gaethje, meanwhile, could face a rising contender like Riley-or another top-five opponent-by early 2027.
