Justin Herbert’s playoff drought sparks maturity debate after Warren Sharp’s warning
Justin Herbert’s six-year playoff win drought is now under the microscope after NFL analyst Warren Sharp highlighted the issue on X on July 8, 2025.
Six years into his NFL career, Justin Herbert has yet to win a playoff game. Warren Sharp posted a screenshot of an NFL coordinator’s comments on X, calling Herbert’s maturity into question. The coordinator told Sharp: *“He plays young. He’s incredibly talented and has made progress, but he doesn’t have the maturity level of the other guys as far as how he runs the overall operation and mastery of the position.”*
Sharp amplified the critique with his own post: *“Justin Herbert has played six years in the NFL… hasn’t won a single playoff game… is having his maturity questioned by coaches. Fair or unfair?”*
Herbert has started three playoff games for the Los Angeles Chargers-and lost all three. His most recent defeat came in the wild-card round of the 2024-25 postseason. He played through a broken bone in his non-throwing hand for much of that season, yet the Chargers still fell short.
The scrutiny arrives as the Chargers overhauled their coaching staff this offseason. Mike McDaniel now leads the offense, known for quick, high-percentage throws. The team hopes the new system will cut down on Herbert’s mistakes and help him take the next step.
Despite the criticism, Herbert remains one of the league’s top quarterbacks. An ESPN survey of executives, coaches and scouts this spring placed him on nearly 80% of ballots for the top-QB list.
The Chargers’ 2025 training camp begins soon under McDaniel’s scheme. Herbert will aim to silence doubters by turning regular-season success into postseason wins. The league’s best QBs-Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen, Tua Tagovailoa-have all advanced deep in the playoffs. Herbert’s path to join them starts in the fall.
The maturity debate isn’t just about Herbert’s age. At 26, he’s entering his prime. But the zero playoff wins looms large. Can a new offense and a fresh start change the narrative before January 2026?
