Kalyn Ponga Wins Reprieve After State of Origin Eligibility Rule Change

2026-06-23 · Kalyn Ponga · Player Focus

Kalyn Ponga and other NRL stars have earned a reprieve after the ARL Commission gave the green light to State of Origin eligibility changes.

The new rules mean Ponga can play for the Kiwis in the 2026 Rugby League World Cup and still represent Queensland in 2027.

The ARL Commission announced international allegiances will no longer impact Origin eligibility, a change that **Mr V'landys** said reflects the growth of the international game.

This means players who represent 'Tier 1' nations like New Zealand and England can now play in State of Origin.

Ponga had considered switching to New Zealand ahead of the 2026 Rugby League World Cup, which would have blocked him from representing Queensland.

But the new rules mean he can now play for both the Kiwis and the Maroons.

The change also affects other players, including New Zealand's Addin Fonua-Blake and England pair Victor Radley and AJ Brimson.

The announcement came soon after confirmation that State of Origin will head to New Zealand for the first time in 2027, with Auckland's Eden Park hosting the event.

The New Zealand government reportedly paid $5 million to secure the rights.

As **Mr V'landys** noted, the growth of rugby league in New Zealand has been "nothing short of extraordinary" since 2020.

State of Origin will be showcased on one of the most famous sporting stages in the world, with the eyes of Australia, New Zealand, and the Pacific on Eden Park.

The event is expected to be a milestone moment for the game, with **Mr V'landys** calling it a "cultural phenomenon".

The 2027 State of Origin series will feature the best players from Queensland and New South Wales, with Ponga likely to be a key player for the Maroons.

The series will be played on a date to be confirmed, with the exact schedule to be announced soon.
