Kareem Abdul-Jabbar welcomes Kobe Bryant to 33,000-point club in NBA history

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s place in NBA history grew a little bigger on 18 December 2002 when Kobe Bryant became the third man to join the 33,000-point club.

The Los Angeles Lakers icon dropped 29 points in a vintage first-half display against the Sacramento Kings, vaulting past the 33,000-point plateau. Bryant entered the game eight points shy of the mark and left it as the latest name etched into the record books alongside Karl Malone and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.

Bryant’s 29-point outing featured an 18-point first half that included an alley-oop and a string of signature fadeaways. He shot 10-of-18 from the floor, dished crafty passes, and attacked the rim with his usual mix of flair and precision. The Lakers trailed by as many as 27 in the second half but rallied late, only to fall 118-115 in the final seconds.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar remains the NBA’s all-time leading scorer with 38,387 points, a mark set in 1989. His longevity and consistency set the bar for careers built on skill and durability. Bryant’s arrival in the 33,000-point club underscores how Kareem’s record still towers over the rest, even decades later.

Bryant’s return from three straight games off with a sore shoulder showed in his crispness. The 20-year veteran looked sharper than he had in weeks, carving up the Kings’ defense with drives, passes, and mid-range jumpers. Sacramento led by 21 at halftime, but the Lakers clawed back in the fourth before falling just short.

Bryant’s milestone caps a fleeting flashback to his prime. At 34, he’s in the final stretch of a legendary career. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s record stays untouched for now, but Bryant’s chase keeps the conversation about all-time scoring alive.
