Kawhi Leonard trade limbo: Clippers-Raptors deal may stall until training camp

Kawhi Leonard’s trade from the Los Angeles Clippers to the Toronto Raptors remains stuck in limbo nearly a week after the deal was announced, with the NBA’s investigation still dragging on.

What happened?

The blockbuster swap that sent Leonard to Toronto for Brandon Ingram and Gradey Dick hit a roadblock when the league announced it wouldn’t finalize until its probe into Leonard wraps. The Clippers and Raptors now face a real chance the trade isn’t completed before training camp opens in October, according to John Hollinger of The Athletic.

Hollinger outlined two slim pathways to a quick resolution: either the investigation finds no wrongdoing or the Clippers strike a penalty deal with the league. “Seemingly, the only pathways to an expeditious resolution are if the investigation produces no evidence of wrongdoing: can you imagine if, after all this time, Wachtell comes back and says, ‘We got nothing?’: or if Steve Ballmer and the Clippers basically ‘plea bargain’ to certain penalties and don’t go through the remaining steps of the process,” Hollinger wrote.

Why it matters for Kawhi Leonard

At this stage, the league’s options are limited. Taking away the Clippers’ 2025 fifth pick won’t work: it was already used on Keaton Wagner. Voiding Leonard’s contract also makes no sense now that he has just one year left. The only realistic penalty left is a future draft pick, but the league must first uncover wrongdoing in its year-long probe.

The delay leaves Ingram and Dick in Raptors uniforms on paper while Leonard remains a Clipper in reality. Training camp starts in October, and the sides risk a messy roster crunch if the trade isn’t finalized by then.

What comes next?

The league’s investigation has slogged on for about a year, and the sides have no clear leverage to speed it up. A clean outcome would require either a clean bill of health from the probe or a negotiated penalty package from the Clippers.

Until one of those happens, the Raptors and Clippers are stuck waiting. Leonard’s future in Toronto hinges on a resolution the league has yet to deliver.

The trade was announced on 12 July 2026.
