Kaylee McKeown's Sudden Withdrawal Shakes Up Commonwealth Games Backstroke
Kaylee McKeown, the four-time Olympic champion, has withdrawn from the 2026 Commonwealth Games and Pan Pacific Championships due to glandular fever, leaving a significant gap in Australia’s swimming team. The 22-year-old backstroke star had qualified for all three backstroke events at the Australian Trials despite battling illness.
McKeown’s withdrawal eliminates a highly anticipated rematch with American rival Regan Smith in both the 100m and 200m backstroke events. The duo has dominated global backstroke competitions since 2020. McKeown, who won double gold at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, had planned to make Glasgow her final appearance at the event before retiring from international competition.
Her absence also creates a vacancy in Australia’s 4x100m medley relay team, where she was a key contributor. The illness follows a storied career that began at the 2018 Gold Coast Games, where she first emerged as a global talent.
Australia’s depth will be tested with rising stars like Mollie O’Callaghan, Iona Anderson, and Hannah Fredericks stepping into the spotlight. O’Callaghan, the Olympic champion in the 100m freestyle, holds the sixth-fastest 100m backstroke time in history (57.88) from the 2024 Olympic Trials.
Anderson, the 2024 World Championships silver medalist, and Fredericks, who finished sixth at the Trials, are now likely starters for the Commonwealth Games. Jenna Forrester could also feature in the 200m backstroke following McKeown’s exit.
O’Callaghan faces a packed schedule in Glasgow, with the 100m and 200m freestyle events already on her plate. Adding the 100m backstroke would require her to swim heats and semifinals for both the 100m backstroke and 200m freestyle on the same day.
Coach Dean Boxall must decide whether to overload his star swimmer or prioritize her freestyle events. The 100m backstroke final would then coincide with her 100m freestyle semifinals on Day Three of the Games.
- **2026 Commonwealth Games**: July 23-August 3 in Glasgow
- **Pan Pacific Championships**: August 11-15 in Irvine, California
- **McKeown’s Last Major Meet**: 2024 Paris Olympics (where she won bronze in the 200m backstroke)
McKeown’s withdrawal marks the end of an era for Australian swimming, which now turns to O’Callaghan and a new generation to maintain its competitive edge in backstroke events.
