Detroit Pistons Pursue Kevin Durant in 6-Player Trade with Cade Cunningham

The Detroit Pistons are exploring a major trade to acquire Kevin Durant, the 37-year-old veteran superstar, in a proposed 6-player deal with the Houston Rockets and Milwaukee Bucks.

What happened?

The Pistons, led by franchise cornerstone Cade Cunningham, are seeking a star addition to inject experience into their young core. The proposed trade would see the Pistons acquire Durant from the Rockets, who would receive Tyler Herro from the Bucks, along with Detroit's Paul Reed, Isaiah Joe, and a 2027 first-round pick.

Why it matters for Kevin Durant

Durant, who signed a two-year, $90 million extension with the Rockets last summer, has been a valuable veteran piece for the franchise. Despite his age, he hasn't shown any signs of slowing down and could contribute for at least two more seasons. His deal includes a player option for 2027-28, which would require the Pistons to match salaries by moving four pieces in this framework.

What comes next?

The proposed trade would be a significant upgrade for the Pistons, even on a short-term basis. Cunnigham is already on an MVP trajectory, and the addition of Durant would create a loaded roster with the rising center Jalen Duren. The 2025-26 campaign was impressive for the Pistons, but building on that success is often the most difficult aspect of being a top franchise.

The Pistons have been working on their flexibility for deals like this, relieving Tobias Harris and Isaiah Stewart of their contracts. Taking on Durant's deal would push them to the luxury threshold with other looming extensions, but they wouldn't be under any cap pressure with this trade. The Rockets, on the other hand, could take on Herro's huge salary to remain competitive and pivot toward a different long-term approach.

The proposed trade would be a major step for the Pistons toward becoming legitimate contenders. With Cunningham in the backcourt and Duren in the frontcourt, and Durant orchestrating the wings, the Pistons could move from being a top team to a championship contender.
