KL Rahul Gets Bigger ODI Role as Srikkanth Calls Blueprint Flawed

2026-07-08 · KL Rahul · Opinion

KL Rahul was urged to step up his ODI responsibilities on 7 July 2026 after former India opener Krishnamachari Srikkanth warned that the team’s current blueprint is limiting the batsman’s development.

Srikkanth, speaking to a sports panel, said India’s one‑day strategy relies too heavily on a fixed top‑order and leaves little room for Rahul to play his natural game. He argued the plan “is not good for him” and risks squandering his talent. The former captain pointed to recent series where Rahul’s strike rate dipped when forced into a rigid slot.

Rahul, now 31, has already amassed over 5,000 ODI runs with a healthy average of 46.2. Yet his recent innings have been punctuated by cautious starts, a symptom Srikkanth attributes to limited freedom. Giving Rahul more power‑play responsibility could boost the run‑rate, something India struggled with in the last three ODIs, posting an average of 4.8 runs per over.

Experts suggest reshuffling the batting order to let Rahul open or bat at number three, positions where he has previously scored three centuries. That shift would also free up the middle order for emerging players like Shubman Gill to cement their places. Srikkanth believes a flexible approach will keep the side adaptable across conditions.

India faces a three‑match ODI series against England starting 15 July. If Rahul takes on a more aggressive role, the side could see a higher scoring rate, potentially turning close games into comfortable wins. The board has not confirmed any changes yet, but the comment has sparked debate among analysts and fans alike.

A larger ODI role could revive Rahul’s standing after a dip in form during the last World Cup qualifiers, where he averaged just 32.5. A successful stint would also reinforce his case for a permanent spot in the Test side, where his technique remains highly regarded.

The BCCI’s selection committee meets on 12 July to finalize the squad and batting order. All eyes will be on whether they heed Srikkanth’s advice. Rahul’s response will likely shape his trajectory for the rest of the season, especially with the Asian Games and a potential Champions Trophy on the horizon.
