Klay Thompson Heats Up Miami: Interest Grows Amid Free Agency
The Miami Heat are making bold moves this offseason, and four-time NBA champion Klay Thompson has emerged as a key target. Despite rumors linking their interest to LeBron James' potential arrival, the Heat are pursuing Thompson independently, according to reports from The Miami Herald's Barry Jackson and Anthony Chiang on July 14, 2026.
The 36-year-old sharpshooter, a five-time All-Star and the fourth-most prolific three-point shooter in NBA history, is drawing strong interest from Miami. The Heat see Thompson as a valuable addition to their roster, especially after acquiring Giannis Antetokounmpo. Last season, Thompson averaged 11.7 points, 2.1 rebounds, and 1.4 assists per game, shooting 39.3% from the field and 38.3% from beyond the arc.
With a dominant frontcourt featuring Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo, the Heat need floor spacing to maximize their potential. Thompson’s championship experience and shooting ability make him an attractive option. His ability to stretch the floor could provide the Heat with the offensive firepower they need to compete at the highest level.
There are two possible paths for Miami to land Thompson. The first involves a buyout from the Dallas Mavericks, which would allow the Heat to sign him on a low-cost contract. However, the Mavericks reportedly prefer a trade. NBA insider Jake Weinbach suggested a potential trade framework involving Nikola Jovic and draft compensation.
The Heat currently have a payroll of $198.9 million and are hard-capped at the first apron after acquiring Giannis Antetokounmpo. This leaves them with roughly $10.1 million in free cap space. A trade for Thompson, who has a $17.4 million cap hit, would require careful financial planning. The Heat may need to include a 2027 second-round pick to make the deal work.
