Kyle Busch Remembered: Samantha Busch Thanks NASCAR for Family’s Support After 2026 Loss

Kyle Busch’s death on May 21, 2026 left NASCAR without its two-time champion: and his family without its patriarch.

What happened to Kyle Busch?

Kyle Busch, 41, died suddenly from severe pneumonia that escalated into sepsis. His passing stunned the motorsport world and left his wife, Samantha, and their three children grieving at home. Instead of cheering him on from pit road at Atlanta’s Quaker State 400, Samantha watched from the couch, her grief still raw weeks later.

How the NASCAR community stepped up

Samantha Busch posted an emotional Instagram message before Sunday’s race, thanking the entire NASCAR family for surrounding her children with love. Drivers wore Busch’s No. 8 gear during introductions at the Coca-Cola 600 just days after his death. Her son Brexton lit up every time he saw a driver in Kyle’s shirt. “It still feels surreal watching from the couch,” she wrote, “and I still catch myself looking for his name on the leaderboard.”

The women who carried Samantha Busch

Samantha singled out the NASCAR wives who delivered meals, texts, and childcare when she couldn’t function. Their kids made cards for daughter Lennix, who still asks when the family will return to the MRO to see her friends. “You didn’t just love on me,” Samantha wrote. “You loved on our children.”

Richard Childress Racing’s lasting tribute

Richard Childress, owner of Richard Childress Racing, stayed close to the Busch family from Kyle’s hospitalization through his passing. RCR retired the No. 8 for good, renumbering Austin Hill’s car to No. 33. Childress promised to hold the No. 8 for Brexton if the boy ever races in NASCAR.

How fans honored Kyle Busch

Fans built memorials outside Daytona International Speedway and other tracks, leaving flowers, letters, die-casts, hats, and endless packs of M&M’s beneath a giant “Rowdy” poster. Donations poured in, too. Samantha closed her message with gratitude for the prayers and stories that have always meant so much to the Busch family.
