Lance Stroll’s $16M Belgian GP Trip Ends in Grid Penalty

2026-07-18 · Lance Stroll · Player Focus

Lance Stroll arrived at the Belgian Grand Prix in style-via a $16 million private jet and helicopter-but his weekend took a sharp turn when he was handed a 10-place grid penalty. The Canadian Formula 1 driver’s extravagant travel arrangements, including a Bombardier Global 5000 jet and an AgustaWestland AW139 helicopter, became the talk of Spa-Francorchamps before his technical infringement overshadowed the spectacle.

How did Stroll’s travel cost so much?

Stroll’s Bombardier Global 5000, capable of carrying 17 passengers at speeds of 490 knots, landed at Liege Airport after departing from Nice Cote d’Azur. Used models of the jet cost between $10 million and $12 million, with newer configurations reaching $14 million. The AgustaWestland AW139 helicopter, priced at over $7.5 million, whisked him the final 10 minutes to the track. Combined, the aircraft totaled around $16 million in value.

Why was Stroll penalized?

The FIA confirmed Stroll had used a fourth MGU-K unit for the season, exceeding the three-unit limit set by the 2026 Sporting Regulations. The penalty, announced before the race, dropped him 10 places on the grid. This was not his first setback-at Silverstone, he accumulated three five-second penalties for track limit breaches.

What does this mean for Stroll’s season?

Despite the luxury travel, Stroll’s Belgian GP weekend was marred by penalties. Starting from the back of the grid, he faced an uphill battle. The incident highlights the contrast between his off-track extravagance and on-track struggles, raising questions about his focus and performance in the championship.
