Lando Norris Assesses McLaren's F1 Position

2026-06-27 · Lando Norris · Player Focus

Lando Norris thinks McLaren is in the right position after a tough qualifying session at the Austrian Grand Prix on 27 Jun.

The team had shown promise in free practice but couldn't match their rivals in qualifying, with Norris and teammate Oscar Piastri ending up sixth and seventh respectively.

George Russell took pole position, with Ferrari close behind, and Norris admits it takes a "pretty insane lap" to jump up the order on a circuit like this.

Norris is still searching for his first Grand Prix win as defending World Champion, and this result won't make it easier, especially with his home Grand Prix in Silverstone coming up next week.

The British driver is confident of a good result if McLaren can extract the maximum from their package on race day, citing the hot conditions and tyre degradation as key factors.

Norris will be looking to make the most of his starting position and capitalize on any opportunities that come his way, with strategy and pit stops playing a crucial role in the outcome of the race.

The Austrian Grand Prix will be a challenging one, with high temperatures expected to affect tyre degradation, and Norris will need to be at his best to secure a good result.

Norris and Piastri's best times in Q3 were around four hundredths of a second off Max Verstappen's time, showing just how close the competition is.

The McLaren driver is staying positive, though, and is focused on making the most of his chances on race day, knowing that a good result is within reach if everything goes to plan.
