Leon Marchand Returns to Chase World Records
Leon Marchand is returning to the pool, seeking to break more world records. He won four gold medals at the Paris Olympics last year.
Marchand will head the field at the swimming world championships in Singapore, the biggest meet since the Olympics.
He will swim only the 200-meter and 400-meter individual medleys and some team relays.
Marchand credits Bob Bowman, his coach at the University of Texas at Austin, for pushing him to improve. Bowman has also coached Michael Phelps to 23 Olympic gold medals.
Marchand will try to break the 200 IM record set by Ryan Lochte in 2011.
The swimming world championships in Singapore will serve as a stepping stone for many athletes toward the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
Marchand, along with Canada's Summer McIntosh and Katie Ledecky of the United States, will be among the top swimmers to watch in Singapore.
Marchand's life has changed since winning four gold medals, and he now has to plan his daily activities carefully.
He has learned to say 'no' better and values his peace when traveling out of France.
The youngest competitor in the field is 12-year-old Yu Zidi of China, who could be a medal contender in her three races.
Marchand is excited to have a lighter schedule than usual and is looking forward to seeing how far he can go.
He wants to break all the records, but is unsure when that will happen.
Many are expecting him to make more history in Singapore, starting Sunday.
Marchand will also try to break his own 400 IM record, set at the 2023 worlds in Fukuoka, Japan.
He has trust in his coach, Bob Bowman, who knows how to be calm in every situation.
Bowman has taught Marchand and other swimmers how to handle pressure and perform at their best.
Marchand is ready to make more history and will start his quest on Sunday in Singapore.
