Liam Lawson misses Spa upgrade after coin-flip tiebreaker with Lindblad

Liam Lawson missed out on a Racing Bulls Formula 1 car upgrade at Spa-Francorchamps after a coin-flip tiebreaker left him trailing teammate Arvid Lindblad.

What happened?

On Friday at the Belgian Grand Prix, Racing Bulls brought an upgraded cooling system to Spa. But with only one car eligible for the upgrade, team boss Alan Permane turned the decision into a novelty tiebreaker. After both drivers agreed in Austria, Permane set a Silverstone qualifying shootout: whoever qualified higher would get the Spa upgrade.

Lindblad lined up ninth in Silverstone qualifying, 0.412s clear of Lawson in P10. That margin locked in the tiebreaker and handed the upgrade to the rookie. Permane confirmed the process was fair. “They both signed up for it,” he said.

The tiebreaker capped a heated intra-team rivalry. Lawson sits 10th in the drivers’ championship, one place and 19 points ahead of Lindblad. Yet the upgrade snub stung after a season where Lawson has pushed for Racing Bulls’ best-of-the-rest fight against Alpine.

Lawson still turned the tables on Sunday. He finished sixth in the Belgian Grand Prix, one spot clear of Lindblad in seventh. The result underlined the depth of Racing Bulls’ lineup: and the razor-thin margins that define F1.

Permane defended the tiebreaker as a light-touch way to settle the upgrade. “We tried to put a bit of fun to it, rather than just allocating it to someone,” he told media between Friday practice sessions.

He also promised Lawson the next big upgrade if the situation repeats. “What we’ll do, if it happens again later in the season: we’ve got another big thing coming at some point: it will go to Liam. He’ll automatically get it the next time.”

What comes next?

The tiebreaker injected fresh tension into the Racing Bulls garage. Permane expects more fireworks. “I’m sure there’ll be some management needed,” he said. “They’re incredibly close.”

With the next big upgrade looming, the team’s next call could again decide who gains the edge. For now, Lawson’s focus stays on closing the gap to Alpine in the constructors’ fight: and beating Lindblad on track.
