Liam Lawson Shuts Down Red Bull Seat Rumors Amid Tsolov Surge

2026-07-10 · Liam Lawson · Player Focus

**Liam Lawson** told the media on Monday that he isn’t worrying about Red Bull speculation, even as junior **Nikola Tsolov** continues to dominate Formula 2 and rumors swirl about a possible seat change for the Racing Bulls driver.

The chatter began after Tsolov, the Bulgarian F2 leader, swept both races at Silverstone-the first driver since **Zane Maloney** to do so in Bahrain 2024-and then won the feature race in Austria. Those victories gave him three straight wins, a record since the series rebranded from GP2. Red Bull’s history of reshuffling drivers turned the impressive run into fuel for the rumor mill, with some fans wondering if the Kiwi’s 2027 seat could be at risk.

Lawson’s reaction was calm and focused. He said, “It’s honestly not even something I’ve really thought about. The summer break is usually when things get considered, but we still have a few races left.” He added that the team’s recent performance has been “working very well” and that he wants to finish the season strong. The 23‑year‑old emphasized that he’s learned not to get distracted by speculation, noting he’s seen similar situations play out within the Red Bull system.

Team principal **Alan Permane** poured cold water on the rumours, calling them “just rumours” and confirming that no discussion about Lawson’s seat has taken place. While he acknowledged Tsolov’s “remarkable Formula 2 campaign,” Permane stressed that no official plans have been announced regarding the Bulgarian’s potential promotion. The team’s official stance remains that Lawson’s seat is secure for now.

Lawson’s position in the Red Bull junior hierarchy is still relatively new. After climbing through Super Formula in Japan and earning his F1 seat, he’s now navigating the pressure of internal competition. Maintaining focus on race results rather than off‑track speculation could be key to extending his tenure with the Racing Bulls. A strong finish to the current season would reinforce his value and potentially silence doubters.

With Tsolov’s form continuing to rise, Red Bull will likely keep a close eye on his development. However, any decision about a driver swap won’t be made until the off‑season, according to Permane. Lawson’s immediate priority remains extracting maximum performance from the car in the remaining races, while the team watches the junior program’s progress.

Reflecting on his journey, Lawson admitted that the reality of Formula 1 differs from his childhood imagination, but not in a negative way. He described the sport as something he “put on a pedestal” as a kid, only to discover it’s more complex than expected. Yet he remains grateful for the opportunity and focused on delivering results for Racing Bulls.

The next few races will test whether Lawson can keep his seat secure while Tsolov’s momentum builds, setting the stage for a potentially dramatic driver market ahead of the 2027 season.
