Magnus Carlsen named Esports Foundation Ambassador alongside Faker and Ronaldo

2026-07-15 · Magnus Carlsen · Player Focus

Magnus Carlsen has been named a Game Ambassador for the Esports World Cup and Esports Nations Cup through 2028. The Norwegian chess grandmaster joins League of Legends legend Faker and Portuguese footballer Cristiano Ronaldo in the Esports Foundation’s Ambassador Program.

What happened?

On 15 Jul 2026, the Esports Foundation announced Magnus Carlsen as a Game Ambassador. The role covers the Esports World Cup and Esports Nations Cup through 2028. Carlsen leads Team Liquid’s chess division and won the EWC title last year.

Why it matters for Magnus Carlsen

Carlsen’s appointment puts chess on the same stage as esports heavyweights. The Foundation wants players to shape the future of competitive gaming. Ralf Reichert, the CEO, called Faker the “defining athlete of competitive gaming.” Carlsen’s inclusion follows his EWC win in 2025.

What the role involves

As Game Ambassador, Carlsen will represent esports players at international events. He’ll join media engagements and leadership forums. The goal is stronger ties between players, fans, and organizations. Faker said he wants to represent the players and fans who built esports.

The bigger picture

The announcement lands amid a standoff between the Esports Foundation and KeSPA. In April 2026, the Foundation ended its partnership with KeSPA over national roster control for the Esports Nations Cup. Local media reported indirect intervention in player selection. Carlsen’s role adds global visibility to chess within esports.
