Marc Márquez fights back as Ducati, Aprilia battle for MotoGP title

Marc Márquez has roared back into contention as the 2026 MotoGP title fight tightens between Ducati and Aprilia, with the Spanish star now just 18 points behind the points leader after a dominant mid-season surge.

What happened?

Ducati and Aprilia have traded blows all season in the closest title fight of the 1000cc era. Aprilia stunned the field by winning the first three grands prix of 2026, but Ducati struck back when Alex Márquez took victory at Jerez on 18 April. The pendulum swung again at Le Mans, where Aprilia locked out the podium, only for Ducati to answer with a one-two in Catalunya on 25 May.

Marc Márquez then seized control, rattling off four straight wins at Balaton Park and Brno in June. But Aprilia hit back with a commanding weekend at Assen on 15 June, before Ducati and Marc Márquez reclaimed the top step at Sachsenring on 29 June.

Where Marc Márquez stands now

After that late charge, Marc Márquez sits third in the standings, 18 points adrift of Aprilia’s Jorge Martin. Marco Bezzecchi, still sidelined with injury, trails by 22 points, while VR46 Ducati rider Fabio Di Giannantonio lurks just 24 points behind Martin.

“It’s the riders who make the difference right now,” said Davide Tardozzi, Ducati’s sporting director, speaking to Sky Italia. “On some tracks, like Silverstone, Aprilia will be the favourite. On others, we might be. But the title will go to whoever rides best.”

Why the fight matters for Marc Márquez

Marc Márquez’s resurgence has turned a Ducati-Aprilia duel into a three-way scrap. The Spanish six-time champion has shown he can still dictate terms when conditions suit him, and his recent form proves he’s a threat even when the bike isn’t the outright pacesetter.

Aprilia’s Jorge Martin leads by 14 points, but the margin is small enough that a single mistake or mechanical issue could hand the advantage to Marc Márquez. With six rounds left, including Silverstone on 7-9 August, the title is still up for grabs.

What comes next?

The second half of the season kicks off at Silverstone, where Aprilia will start as slight favourites on a track that suits their aggressive style. Ducati, though, has shown it can adapt, and Marc Márquez has already proven he can exploit any weakness.

Tardozzi insists the rivalry will stay tight until the final round. “The bikes are equally competitive,” he said. “I think it will stay that way until the end of the season.”

With three different manufacturers sharing wins across the opening 11 rounds, the 2026 title fight has become a true three-horse race-Marc Márquez included.
