Marc Márquez’s fearless style fuels rise of motocross prodigies Coenen twins

2026-07-13 · Marc Márquez · Tactical Analysis

Marc Márquez’s relentless limit-pushing style has become the blueprint for the Coenen twins, two of motocross’s hottest young talents.

Lucas and Sasha Coenen, 19-year-old Belgian twins, have exploded onto the MXGP scene this year with performances that mirror Márquez’s signature fearlessness. Their aggressive approach-often clearing 30-second leads before crashing-has drawn direct comparisons to the MotoGP great’s career-long philosophy.

Sasha’s latest stunt came at Southwick, where he led by 14 seconds before crashing at a key jump. He remounted his KTM, rode to victory, then revealed in the pits he’d broken his collarbone. His mechanic later lifted the winner’s trophy at the podium ceremony.

Lucas, meanwhile, crashed at the opening corner of the first 450 race, fought back to fourth, then suffered another concussion and retired. Yet he still stunned Jeffrey Herlings with a dominant display earlier this season and finished second behind Jett Lawrence at Thunder Valley.

During the broadcast, former motocross racer Jason Thomas drew a direct line between the twins’ approach and Márquez’s MotoGP dominance. “That’s a philosophy they’ve gotten from Marc Márquez,” Thomas said. “They try to find the limit of traction in practice and qualifying-just like Márquez does.”

But Thomas warned the twins’ uncompromising style comes at a cost. Sasha’s Southwick crash sidelined him with a collarbone fracture, forcing him to miss races. Márquez has lived this reality too: his relentless pushing has delivered historic wins but also a career littered with injuries.

The twins currently lead their MXGP classes, but their futures hinge on avoiding Márquez’s injury toll. Sasha’s crash at Southwick on 18 June 2026 left him sidelined, while Lucas’s concussion forced a withdrawal.

Márquez himself has spoken openly this year about his injury struggles and retirement plans. His message to the twins? Find the edge-but don’t cross it too often.

The MXGP title chase resumes this weekend at Foxhill, UK. The Coenens’ rise proves Márquez’s influence, but their ability to stay upright will decide if his legacy inspires a new champion-or another cautionary tale.
