Marcus Rashford’s Future Shaped by Inner‑Circle Advisor Danny Donachie

2026-07-13 · Marcus Rashford · Transfer

**Marcus Rashford** will be back at Manchester United on 1 July 2026 after Barcelona declined a £26 million purchase option, and his next step hinges on advice from performance coach Danny Donachie, according to former scout Bryan King.

King, who scouted for Aston Villa and Everton, told Football Insider that Donachie-a sports psychologist who worked with him at Everton-sits on Rashford’s inner circle. Donachie has travelled to Barcelona multiple times during the winger’s loan, offering mental‑strength support. The insider added that agents and other trusted figures will also weigh in when Rashford decides whether to stay at Old Trafford or explore a move.

Rashford spent the 2025‑26 season on loan at Barcelona, netting 14 goals and delivering 11 assists in La Liga. Despite those numbers, the Catalan club chose not to trigger the £26 million option to buy on 30 June 2026. Consequently, his contract with Manchester United-which runs until 2028-remains in force, leaving his summer plans open.

United have a £40 million release clause that could be activated if the club decides to cash in. However, King hinted that Rashford is “weighing the possibility of staying put” and that a potential move to Aston Villa is not ruled out. The winger’s confidence surged during his Villa loan the previous year, and a return to the Midlands could offer regular playing time under Michael Carrick, the new United manager.

If Donachie advises staying, United may keep Rashford as a key winger for the 2026‑27 Premier League campaign. Should the advisor suggest a fresh challenge, Villa or another Premier League side could trigger the clause before the transfer window closes on 31 August 2026. Unai Emery, who praised Rashford’s professionalism last April, remains a possible ally if a move materialises.

King did not give an exact deadline, but insiders expect a firm answer by mid‑July 2026, once all parties have consulted Donachie and the player’s agents. Fans will hear the final verdict before the pre‑season fixtures begin on 10 July 2026.

England manager Gareth Southgate will monitor the situation closely. Rashford’s form at Barcelona kept him in the national squad for the upcoming Euro 2028 qualifiers, and a stable club environment could cement his place on the wing.

The next few weeks will reveal whether Danny Donachie’s counsel steers Rashford back into United’s lineup or sends him on a new adventure elsewhere.
