Maria Sharapova Offers Advice to 2026 French Open Champion Mirra Andreeva

2026-07-06 · Maria Sharapova · Player Focus

Maria Sharapova, the Russian tennis athlete, congratulated Mirra Andreeva on her maiden Grand Slam title at the 2026 French Open. Andreeva, 19, won the title, joining the ranks of teenage major champions like Sharapova and Serena Williams.

Andreeva received a congratulatory message from Sharapova on Instagram, which read, “Proud of you @_mirraandreeva_. The celebration says it all. Excited, but not satisfied. The sign of a champion.”

Andreeva was surprised by Sharapova's message, saying it was “very nice to see, very special that she congratulated me.” The two have met several times before, and Andreeva recalls talking to Sharapova about their respective careers.

Sharapova, who retired in 2020, “mentored me a little bit,” Andreeva reveals. Andreeva asked Sharapova about how she dealt with pressure, particularly when she beat Serena Williams in the Wimbledon final at 17.

Andreeva has been touted as one of the next generation's biggest prospects, making her first big splash on the professional tour at 15. She is now top 5 in the world with six titles and an Olympic silver medal.

Andreeva aims to lift every Grand Slam trophy at least once in her career, and she is now only three steps away. Sharapova's advice will likely be invaluable as Andreeva navigates the pressures of being a top-ranked tennis player.

Andreeva is still like any other teenager, enjoying activities like watching TV series and reading books. She says, “I still like to not do anything when I'm off the court... I'm that kind of person that whenever I get back to my room or to my apartment, I never go out anymore.”

Andreeva's simple approach to life off the court may be a key factor in her success on it. With Sharapova's guidance, she will look to continue her winning ways and become a dominant force in women's tennis.

The 2026 French Open was a breakthrough tournament for Andreeva, and her win will be remembered as a milestone in her young career. As she looks to the future, Andreeva will undoubtedly draw on the advice and experience of tennis legends like Maria Sharapova.
