Mary Lou Retton Arrested for DUI Amid Health Battle

Mary Lou Retton was arrested for DUI in May 2025, just months after a brutal health battle almost took her life.

The Olympic hero was cuffed and charged with "driving under the influence of alcohol, controlled substances, or drugs; penalties," after police found a “screw top container of wine” in her Porsche.

The former athlete appeared glassy-eyed and ready to break down in tears in her mugshot, released by the Fairmont City Police Department.

Video of her arrest showed Retton in the middle of a sobriety test, including attempting to walk in a straight line, on the same day she was pulled over, May 2025.

When officers made contact with Retton, "the odor of alcohol was emitting from her person," and she was slurring her words, according to the complaint.

Retton spent a month in the hospital in 2024, where she had to be intubated because she couldn’t breathe, and her daughters were told to say their goodbyes.

"I should be dead," Retton previously told Hoda Kotb during an interview with *Today*.

Retton's children set up an online fundraiser that reeled in close to $460,000 to help with her medical bills and recovery, which she said "saved my life.”

Retton was issued a personal recognizance bond of $1,500, which she posted that same day, and her attorney, Edmund J. Rollo, called reports of her "vanishing" after the arrest "grossly inaccurate".

The gold medalist, who struck gold at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, defended her daughters against backlash from social media for the fundraiser, saying "They didn’t deserve that. They were just trying to take care of me," Retton said.

Retton added: "You’re welcome to your opinion. But you weren’t in that situation. My daughters stepped up to the plate and they saved my life,” she said, on the fundraiser that helped her recovery.
