Maverick Viñales' KTM Struggles: Will 2026 Be His Last MotoGP Season?

2026-07-17 · Maverick Viñales · Player Focus

Maverick Viñales' MotoGP future hangs in the balance as tensions with KTM escalate. The Spanish rider, who joined KTM with high hopes in 2025, now faces an uncertain end to his premier-class career after a series of setbacks and public disputes.

What Went Wrong for Viñales at KTM?

Viñales' move to KTM in 2025 initially showed promise. He led the Qatar Grand Prix before a tyre pressure penalty cost him a podium. But a crash at the 2025 German Grand Prix left him with a serious shoulder injury, derailing his season. Even after surgery following the 2026 US Grand Prix, his recovery remains incomplete.

The injury wasn't his only hurdle. Viñales' early-season struggles and absence from the fast-moving rider market led KTM to sign Alex Marquez and Fabio Di Giannantonio for 2027 instead. His hopes of staying with Tech3 faded further when KTM voided a contract he described as 'bad for my confidence.'

Why the Relationship Soured

Public criticism from both sides has fueled the fire. Viñales accused KTM of reneging on their agreement, while KTM boss Pit Beirer suggested Viñales underestimated the possibility of staying with Tech3. 'I didn’t know that this is, for him, no option,' Beirer said, hinting at a breakdown in communication.

The tension is palpable. Viñales' frustration stems from unmet expectations, while KTM's decisions reflect a shift in priorities. The once-promising partnership now seems irreparable.

What’s Next for Viñales?

With his MotoGP future uncertain, Viñales faces a critical juncture. His injury-plagued season and contract disputes have left him without a clear path forward. If the relationship with KTM doesn’t survive 2026, Viñales may have to explore options outside MotoGP.

For now, the focus remains on recovery and performance. But with each passing race, the likelihood of a 2027 MotoGP return diminishes. The clock is ticking for Viñales to prove his worth-or find a new home.
