Max Holloway fight: McGregor’s manager denies knee injury ahead of short bout
Max Holloway’s latest UFC outing at UFC 309 on 14 December 2025 has been framed by Conor McGregor’s camp after the Irishman’s short-lived return.
Conor McGregor’s manager, John Kavanagh, pushed back on reports that his fighter carried a knee injury into the brief middleweight scrap with Max Holloway at UFC 309 on 14 December 2025. The 30-second opening round finished with Holloway landing a left hand that dropped McGregor, prompting an immediate referee stoppage. Kavanagh told reporters the bout was clean and that McGregor showed no signs of a knee problem before the fight.
Holloway improved to 25-7 in the UFC with the stoppage, extending his streak of wins inside the distance. The finish also marked the quickest stoppage of his UFC career and the first time he’s finished an opponent in the first round since 2017. For McGregor, the loss dropped him to 23-6 overall and raised questions about his readiness to return to the cage after a near two-year layoff.
Kavanagh said McGregor will need time to recover and that any future plans will depend on medical clearance. Holloway, meanwhile, is expected to stay in the featherweight division and chase another title shot after his dominant win over Brian Ortega in July 2025. The UFC has not yet booked his next fight, but a return to the top contender picture looks likely.
Holloway called the finish clean and said he felt strong throughout the exchanges. McGregor, in a post-fight message, thanked fans and vowed to return stronger. Kavanagh added that the knee concern was overblown and that McGregor simply misjudged the distance on the left hand that ended the fight.
