Morgan Gibbs-White targeted by Aston Villa in £117m-funded swoop for replacement

Morgan Gibbs-White is now Aston Villa’s prime candidate to plug the hole left by Morgan Rogers after Chelsea agreed a £117 million deal for the American midfielder on 18 June.

What’s driving Aston Villa’s move?

Villa have tracked Gibbs-White for months and now have the cash to act after pocketing £117 million from Chelsea’s swoop for Rogers. Unai Emery wants a direct replacement who can play through the middle or out wide and who already scores goals. Gibbs-White ticks every box, according to former Villa scout Mick Brown, who told Football Insider the club are ready to spend big to close the gap on Arsenal and Manchester City.

How tough will Nottingham Forest be?

Forest are dug in. They’ve already banked £116 million from Elliot Anderson’s sale to City and won’t entertain talks unless a “huge” fee lands on the table, Brown said last month. Gibbs-White remains their most important asset, and they’ll demand a king’s ransom to let him leave the City Ground this summer.

What’s Gibbs-White’s position in the market?

The England international has long been linked with Arsenal and Manchester City, but Villa now lead the chase after Emery’s side prepared contingency plans for Rogers’ exit. Gibbs-White’s Champions League football and step-up in profile could sway him, though Forest could yet force Villa to raise their bid.

When could a deal land?

Villa are moving fast. They’ve been eyeing Gibbs-White since February and could test Forest’s resolve within days, using the Rogers windfall to fund a move that won’t come cheap. Brown reckons Emery will push hard to get it done before the late-summer window tightens.
