MS Dhoni’s CSK shock as Fleming exits after IPL 2026 failure

MS Dhoni’s Chennai Super Kings have cut ties with Stephen Fleming, the coach who led them to five IPL titles, after another barren campaign ended in 8th place on 15 July 2026.

What happened?

Chennai Super Kings finished eighth in IPL 2026 with 12 points from 14 games. The five-time champions missed the playoffs for a third straight year. On 13 July 2026, CSK announced they would not renew Fleming’s contract ahead of IPL 2027 after 17 seasons together.

Fleming, 49, joined CSK in 2008 as a player before taking charge as head coach in 2009. His partnership with MS Dhoni produced five IPL crowns and two Champions League T20 trophies. CSK also reached 10 finals and 12 playoffs between 2009 and 2026.

Why it matters for MS Dhoni

MS Dhoni’s legacy is now tied to the end of an era. Fleming’s exit marks the first major break in the captain-coach axis that defined CSK’s dominance. The side’s slide-ninth in 2023, fifth in 2024, tenth in 2025, eighth in 2026-coincides with Fleming’s departure.

CSK’s last title came in 2023 when they beat Gujarat Titans, led by Hardik Pandya, in the final. Since then, the franchise has cycled through three seasons without a playoff berth.

What comes next?

CSK will now search for a new head coach before IPL 2027. Fleming leaves after 18 years with the franchise, calling it “the privilege of my coaching career.” The club’s owner Rupa Gurunath called him “the heartbeat of our coaching unit.”

Fleming also guided CSK in SA20 and MLC. Joburg Super Kings reached four straight SA20 playoffs under him but never the final. In MLC, they made the playoffs in the first three editions but never progressed further.

The search for Fleming’s successor begins immediately. CSK’s next move will shape MS Dhoni’s final chapter as captain and the team’s push to reclaim the top four.
